Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has instructed that schools adopt a policy of emphasizing the Muslim world’s contributions to the advancement of humanity. These advancements involve Islamic influences on science, art, mathematics, and the discovery of America.
Wait a second…
Nope, you read that right. According to Turkey’s president, Muslims discovered America close to 300 years before Columbus. He’s been slammed by many people, mocking his claims. Cartoonists have also joked about the building of a Mosque, where Columbus originally built the first church on the western continents.
Erdoğan defended his claims about the discovery of the Americas and underlined that the suggested had not originally been made by him. “This claim is not new. It is mentioned in Prof. Fuat Sezgin’s books. A number of academics in Turkey and in the world have made this claim,” he said, without referring to his suggestion that the Muslims who discovered Cuba built a mosque on a hill there.
Well, it looks like it’s time to revise out history books, folks! Obviously, back when the Islamic empire was expanding at an amazing rate, a Muslim expedition travelled to the Americas, made contact, stayed for a while, and left two entire continents untouched! The most amazing part is that they did all this without leaving any evidence at all!
Well, I suppose it really doesn’t matter which side in this argument you decide to take. Everyone has their story. America thinks it was Columbus, Turkey thinks it was an Islamic expedition, the Mormons think it was Jesus.
Personally, I’m of the belief that these badasses got here first:
