Because there’s literally nothing more important going on in America right now!
Target, the shopping center that people go to when they don’t want to go to Walmart, has recently become a… well, target, for their newest stance on the LGBT community and equality. Their latest policy allows transgender people to use the restrooms according to the gender they associate with, not what’s on their birth certificate.
Fox News reports: “We believe that everyone – every team member, every guest, and every community – deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally,” the company wrote in a statement. “Consistent with this belief, Target supports the federal Equality Act, which provides protections to LGBT individuals, and opposes action that enables discrimination.”
While it seems like a nice sentiment, and some people see this as a step in the right direction, there are quite a few others who are horrified by the thought of opposing genders sharing the same stall. Among them is the American Family Association, which has recently put up an online petition to boycott Target until they change their bathroom law. So far over a million people have signed the pledge.
“Nearly everyone has a mother, wife, daughter or friend who is put in jeopardy by this policy,” AFA President Tim Wildmon said. “Predators and voyeurs would take advantage of the policy to prey on those who are vulnerable.”
“Everybody knows it’s wrong for men to use the same bathrooms and fitting rooms with little girls, Target has decided they don’t care about the vast majority. They only care about the tiny, tiny minority.”
“We want to make it very clear that AFA does not believe the transgender community poses this danger to the wider public,” Wildmon said. “Rather, this misguided and reckless policy provides a possible gateway for predators who are out there.”
What I find interesting is the demographic the AFA has ignored. They’ve mentioned the transgender community, and the “bathroom predators” who are rubbing their hands in delight at this new policy. They also mentioned mothers, wives, daughters, and the female demographic as a whole, who are potentially threatened.
But what about men? Doesn’t transgenderism work both ways? Can’t women who identify as male use the men’s room? Where’s the outcry over the little boys who are going to be assaulted by perverts? Not to seem cold or uncaring, but we only seem to care when it’s women and girls who are in danger. Men and boys are just expected to tough it out. Seems to me like we’re being a bit disrespectful to all parties involved with a mindset like that.
