…And promptly threw him back across the border wall for having an Hispanic name!
Presidential candidate and one of the plagues of Egypt Donald Trump does not speak about his faith that often. Aside from his “Two Corinthians” thing a while back, I can’t really recall many other times religion has been a key point in his speeches. This, and his general demeanor, has led many people to believe that the only god Trump worships is himself.
Like many things Trump has done, his vagueness about religious leanings has led to division and uncertainty. Evangelical Christians, traditionally a Republican-voting demographic, is unsure what to do. Some are sticking to their political allegiances, holding their noses, and supporting Trump. Others are holding out, wanting a candidate who truly holds the same beliefs as them.
According to James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, Christians don’t have to wait any longer! Mr. Trump has “recently” become a follower of Jesus Christ, according to him. Therefore, it’s a-ok for the Christian demographic to support him
The LA Times reports: “I don’t know when it was, but it has not been long,” Dobson said of what he described as Trump’s new closer relationship with Christ during an interview with a Pennsylvania church pastor. ”I believe he really made a commitment, but he’s a baby Christian.”
Despite his effort to rein in support from church leaders, some remain skeptical.
“We will be watching, listening and waiting to see how he continues to relate on the critical issues of life, family and religious liberty,” Paul Weber, president of the Family Policy Alliance, told The Times earlier this week.
So, is Trump a Christian? I can’t say, nor can anyone else. Even with all the facts, or even a personal testimony from Trump himself, not even Mr. Dobson can truly say Trump is saved. Only God knows that for certain, we can only guess.
What I find really interesting is that despite the “war on Christianity” and the “destruction of family values” that’s been going on, the political/religious juggernaut that is American Christianity is still so strong that every politician in our nation has to pay at least lip service to God. It goes to show how persecuted the church in America really is, in my often ignorant and irreverent opinion.
If this stamp of approval from Focus on the Family is what you needed to back Trump, go right ahead. As the Bible says, all rulers and leaders are appointed by God. I’m paraphrasing, of course. Whether their leadership is to aid or to punish, we won’t know until it’s too late. (But, in Trump’s case, I think we can back a pretty good guess.)
