It’s almost a good sentiment. It would be nice to believe rape would be nonexistent save for the physical differences between men and women, but anyone with even a fraction of cynicism in them knows that’s a load of crap. People are just horrible, horrible things.
Kellyanne Conway, recently made manager of Donald Trump’s presidential bid, seems to be a perfect fit for the campaign in general. She’s already demonstrated a record of saying blatantly incorrect things that are destined to come back to bite her.
Like, for example, her insinuation back in 2013 that rape solely exists because men are simply the stronger sex. She was speaking on the PBS show “To The Contrary,” on the subject of gender equality and the female combat role in the military.
CNN reports: “If we were physiologically — not mentally, emotionally, professionally — equal to men, if we were physiologically as strong as men, rape would not exist,” Conway said. “You would be able to defend yourself and fight him off.”
Later in the show, she went on to discuss the use of sexual assault as a weapon of war as a downside of women on the front lines.
On one hand, there’s the obvious reality that not all women are physically weaker than men. There’s also the disregard for male-on-male assaults and female-on-female assaults, as well as the even more frequently ignored cases of female-on-male sexual assaults. It could also be seen as blaming the victim for not being physically tough enough to protect themselves.
On the other hand, there’s no way that getting buff could hurt your chances against an assailant. That’s a good case for hitting the gym and taking a few self-defence classes.
To summarize: The Donald Trump campaign wants you to start arming up. Hit the gym, buy a gun, never turn your back on another human being! Anybody and everybody is a potential enemy, and you’re a potential target! A sense of danger is key to survival! And let’s not even mention all the murderers and rapists coming in from Mexico…
Not to make you feel paranoid, or anything.
